Snow Day

Maple Syrup Love

Snow

bringer of sloppy roads

cheering children

and 

a Canadian breakfast 

like no other

Doesn't bother me none

I slip on snow pants

Grab the shovel

for the snow removal

and start slogging

for my daily Canuck-style exercises

Don't feel bad for me though

After a brief respite

in a snow bank

I dug back in 

to create a cozy cave

Big enough for 2 lovelies

or one big kid

intent 

on enjoying the best

that Canadian winter

has to offer

Splat!

Gotcha!

You 

have been hit 

with the first snow ball of 

winter! Took until January 3rd for it 

to feel anything akin to seasonal here.

And while I might have lost 

this war, the snow 

has just be-

gun...

Snow in April

Thunder rumbles outside my window.
Sheets of rain wash away winter grime.
Scrape the world clean.
I wait for the memories of snow to be washed away with it,
but it is cold outside.
So cold.

I want to wrap myself in Springtime, 

dance nimbly through the crocuses,

but

they are too chilled

afraid of what might yet unfold 

- certainly no petals today...

So I watch big fat droplets

run down  the window.

Give thanks 

that they are not yesterday's snowflakes

and perhaps will yet bring those promised

May flowers to bloom

'cus Easter is this weekend

and there still ain't no daffodils in my yard

nor leaves unfurling anywhere

but in my dreams

this April

snow - pfft

A Canadian Spring

Round about eleven
it started to snow.
As the flakes piled up
the ground disappeared below.

Alas and alack,
Spring's grip, far too loose
I shivered in nightgown
and begged for dreams to induce

In the wan light of day

I woke to winter a'fresh

back with vengeance galore

a thick shelf o'er all enmeshed.

Well, I should just relent
and make peace with my home

Tis Canada I live in

and this is Spring in its glory - OHM!!!

Friday Weather Systems Around the World

I woke up this morning to a world of white. Mother nature had dumped 5cm of snow on our city, with 20+expected before the end of the day. Argh! Enough already!

While disappointing, as a road trip is planned, the radio had worse news. Across the world Mother nature was wreaking much worse havoc. An earthquake measuring 8.9 on a Richter scale that only goes up to 10 hit Japan with a force to spawn tsunamis there and beyond. A nation not a stranger to earthquakes, this is the largest earthquake they have experienced since they began measuring 140 years ago.

When I turned on the radio at 8:30am (est), announcements of school bus cancellations were quickly superseded by evacuation reports from Hawaii, where a tsunami was expected to hit any time. Hundreds of people were killed and missing in Japan with damage probably running into the billions. Hawaii is still on high alert, but looks like it might be spared the worst of it.

I look back out my window at the snow steadily falling and cannot help but think that having to cancel a road trip is a pretty small price to pay. Life in perspective is a pretty heavy thing. My thoughts are with the people in Japan and beyond that are affected by this devastating disaster. Peace to them.

A Sunny Day

Despite a fresh blanket of snow

covering the mud puddles again.

A halo of flowers

bids haste

to sunshine’s warming balms

Snow

   The promise of snowfall has been broadcast on the radio. It has not begun yet, but a gray ceiling could tinkle with flakes any time. Yesterdays snow was no more than dust collected. Now that my Christmas tree is up I feel the spirit in the air and want some of the white stuff to catch up with the rest of the season. Soon enough it will come. Soon enough I am sure I will tire of it and wait impatiently for spring and the garden to peek back to life. I had anemones growing just last week for goodness sake! They thought it was spring already, but winter refuses to show. Last year the snow began in October with ice storms and coated the world all fall. By December, we had had snow for two months already! Thus far, we have had two snows that were both gone by the lunch hour. I think on G's posts on global warming, but just think this is another year that is living the way that it wants to. So while I would not mind a little snow to kick through, 18 inches might be a little more test to my back muscles than I am ready for. Sorry G. It will come in its own time and I can anticipate until then.
