It is officially summertime. The kids are home from school and vacations are under way. There have been trips to trailers undertaken, near and far, playdates attended, with many more planned and an imminent trip getting sorted out as we speak. All of that, plus I have been trying to fit in a few hours to work as well. No easy task, but it needs to be done. Bills don't pay themselves, right? Plus, those trips need to be funded somehow.
What does this all mean, but a lapse in my own personal writing. A sad state of affairs in my books, but there are only so many hours in a day. Sometimes you just have to go out and live them, while the living is ripe. So I apologize, but you might not see me around these parts in the next little while. A cottage is beckoning from South of the border and the summer sun demands as many swimming breaks as I can fit in. I love you. I miss you and I will be back, but the summer vibe has struck...

Broken Music Monday
This is just heavenly. A friend recommended this song to me and it transported me as soon as I heard it. Unless you are otherwise familiar with this band, let me introduce "Freelance Whales" out of New York. They are a weird conglomeration of musical talents that embrace any instrument they can tickle a tune out of (like harmonium, banjo, glockenspiel, synthesizers, guitars, bass, drums, waterphone - what the heck!!!).
Not that it really counts, but the name of the song is 'Broken Horse', which has me in mind of the ladies over at Mostly Fiction Mondays. The theme this week is Broken. What say you ladies? I personally think the song is far from broken, but I offer a tune to you none the less.

Only You
I have had this song on my head for two days now. You have to excuse me my indulgence, but I need to listen to it. How can you resist such sweet (sappy) lyrics like that? ahhh...
Can you hear me?
(I) want you near me.
its just the touch of your hand
behind a closed door
All I needed was the love you gave...
All I need for another day
All I ever knew
only you
bah dah
ba da
ba da da da...
Feel free to continue on into your day now. ☻

End of an Era
It’s the
End
Of an era
~
Oh Monkey,
You swung us thru
This junglescape
& kept us
On our toes.
Yelling,
“Quit monkeying around
With syllables down.
You’ve only 160
To play
With!”
~
Sniff,
Now
No more…
*****
Tonight is Monkey Man's last night for his weekly Sunday 160 challenge. I know there will be lots of people wondering what to do with their Sundays now, but I for one salute you for all that you did to improve my writing with this great exercise in brevity. Here's a song dedicated to you from a new band I just discovered that does some kick-ass Christmas tunes. Keep swinging Monkey! We love you baby!!

Retail Shopping = Christmas ♥
Christmas is entering my world. I needed some retail therapy today, so started my Christmas shopping. Yup, it has begun. And it was good!
So, I have had Christmas carols running through my head (compliments of other blog posts) and my eye is scanning the room for Christmas Decor placement already (Snow globe on the new table or would that be better for the stuffed Santa?). I have a neighbour across the road with their light display up and keep thinking that I should get on that too, before I am doing it in the snow. I don't have the giant blowup snow globe to display, but a few lights & giant Christmas balls add a little flair to the yard. I bet the kids would flip for a Santa display on the roof, but it ain't going to happen!
Plus, I have been thinking safety. I will be putting the snow tires on the old clunker to keep all my passengers safe in the van again this winter. Winter coats, hats and mitts have been out for a few weeks, but I haven't broken down and put on My winter boots yet. Heck, I saw people in sandals earlier this week! Anyway, I couldn't find a new pair and last years boots left the soles of my feet a little on the damp side. More shopping!!
Just so that I can get you all in the Christmas spirit too, I thought I would share a video that I bet none of you have ever seen before. It is a familiar song, but with a twist. Enjoy!

Leaving on a Jet Plane - The Musical
After yesterday's post, I just couldn't help but share this song. It reminds me of days gone by in a sweet melancholy way. No jet planes in my near future, but I can still dream of good days to come. I can still dream of arms around me, as I remember sweet kisses in your smile.
sweet kiss
morning's bliss
forever a song
in my heart

Saturday's Email of the Week: Birthday Wishes All Over Again
Email of the Week |
While this video came to me compliments of Facebook, I did get an email regarding other songs by the same band. I personally liked "Cake" best though, so thought I would share it here with you.
The occasion this week was a friend's birthday. A long-lost friend and erstwhile boyfriend. In fact, the recipient of this song was my very first boyfriend. He was the one who introduced me to ska and began to open the door for me to an alternative world. When I met him, he was a skin head, rode a motorcycle, owned a scooter, and managed to cook me a shaky meal of spaghetti (with the help of telephone step-by-step directions from a sweet friend that couldn't resist helping the petrified young man). He bought me a super-soft teddy bear with flowers for our first Valentine's Day. No boy had ever given me anything as sweet as that before.
Ah yes, I was 17 and smitten, but there were underlying problems that just couldn't be resolved. This dear boy gave me a taste of pure romance, but lived an achingly long drive away. An hour and a half drive, once a week, every other, then finally once a month killed this fledgling relationship. I was in high school and he was a college man. Our futures were uncertain and ultimately I bet against them. When I broke his heart, I broke mine too. My young years somehow knew that it was the right thing to do though.
but damn, it hurt.
For my fellow Cancer friend, I share this song today though. He always made me laugh and had an endearing smile. I am lucky to call him a friend still.
So for Saturday's email of the week, I share with you "Cake", by Rather Good. Perfect, I think. Happy Saturday everyone. And happy birth-month to all my fellow cancers out there celebrating a birthday this month. WE ROCK!

Forever Young
How did I get here?
this day, today
filled with running,
tasks, responsibilities
that I never dreamed, imagined
or ever really wanted.
these hands cannot
will not
dare not
dare not
(& I don't really want them to)
but they run...
Time past makes me want to cry though.
forever young
laughing curled into
a dark cave
ready to screw the world
and ourselves in the process
but we had each other
and that was more
than I had
in years before,
and some since
So, do I really want to live forever?
forever young?
testing, trying, proving, lying...
My answer,
no
Time past makes me want to cry though.
forever young
laughing curled into
a dark cave
ready to screw the world
and ourselves in the process
but we had each other
and that was more
than I had
in years before,
and some since
So, do I really want to live forever?
forever young?
testing, trying, proving, lying...
My answer,
no
but this song always takes me back to when I did...

Drip, drip, drip...
I can
not remember
a day that it hasn't
rained in the last weeks.
Every day. Maybe not all day,
but at some point every
Single day a little
bit more
rain
has
fallen…
and that my friends is a soggy 160 for Monkey Man's Sunday 160. Hope you had a sunny weekend!

Love and Some Verses
~ while Iron and Wine say it best, I will add some of my own visions of love today ~
husband
You let me snuggle
husband
You let me snuggle
icy toes resting on calves
and I sleep smiling
doves
sweet warmth underfoot
sweet warmth underfoot
promises of tomorrow
future round and cool
ruffled feathers envelop
until doting mate takes o'er
children
laughing eyes light on
my stooped visage uncurling-
run screeching to arms
held straight with a back born fresh
now with love's sweet compromise

The Neverending Story
Turn around
Look at what you see...
Reach the stars
fly up and you'll see
Dream a dream
and what you see will be
lives that keep their secrets
will unfold behind the clouds
And there upon the rainbow
is the answer to a neverending story
In your hands
the birth of a new day
** Those are 55 words, but not mine today. I borrowed them from Limahl, the singer behind "The Neverending Story". It is the theme song for a movie by the same name, that I loved as a kid. I watched it with my girls tonight and they enjoyed the story as much as I did back in 1984, and still do today. It is a movie about believing in yourself and your dreams. It touched my heart with its pure message, and I share with you above some of that.
If you have a Flash Fiction in 55 words, go check out the fun over at G-Man's. He is always a swell host and will make a point of coming to visit you. Happy Friday everyone!

Sweet Day, but Winter's Not Done Yet
I puddle jumped my way through the day today. Slopped over mushy snow banks and avoided skidding through stop signs. All with a smile knowing that these were signs that Spring was on the way.
But really?
Seeing two guys sauntering across Richmond St. in shorts and t-shirts is just too much for me yet.
*My mucklucks are still on my feet, scarf around my neck and hat planted firmly on my head for this Flash 55. It is February and there is snow in the 7-day forecast. I am not putting my winter gear away yet...

MK - You look Marvelous!
I am going out this evening!
"Where to", you ask?
Well, I have been invited to a Mary Kay party! I said this to my Aunt this afternoon and she remarked,
"They're still around?"
Yup, and I get dinner and a makeover out of the deal. Sweet! I expect to be dolled up finer than anything by the end of the evening! Going to be gorgeous, so if you'll excuse me, I am going to change into something sexy to complement my anticipated makeover.
Have a lovely evening all! and babies...
YOU look mahvellous!!!

I'm a gummibar
Just wanted to share a little piece of my Momma hell with you. This has been stuck in my head all evening. Delightful. The kids think it is hilarious. My brain isn't going to offer you anything more from its gummy state I'm afraid. Perhaps tomorrow I will be able to find a poetic pen...

The Voice of Africa
Bob crooned in my ear.
“One love, one heart. Let’s get together and feel alright.
As it was in the beginning! One love…”
Ah, Mr. Marley; the voice of Africa. Everywhere we went we heard his songs played on tinny ghetto blasters. Arnie’s stereo was no better and you would think the monotony of the same 2 tapes over and over again would push one over the edge, but it just became the soundtrack of our journey. When I needed a break, I could always slip on the headphones of my walkman and disappear in the dark whining of Robert Smith from The Cure or John Waite’s sad lament in “Missing You” that reminded me of friends far from arm’s reach. Mostly though, I just sat back and hummed along to Bob Marley as the miles passed under our wheels in the pursuit of life and adventure.
With time, our journey, like Arnie, was beginning to show the wear and tear from our travels. In Masvingo, we had patched the hole that was torn in the muffler from the road from hell in Mozambique. The patch was a temporary fix, and as the miles stretched out ahead of us again, the putty found it could not hold its muster. There were other signs that Arnie was getting tired of our constant pilgrimage as well; our starter motor was now completely done, our fuel efficiency was slowly slipping, the slider door no longer sealed easily, often requiring two, three or more shoves of the door to shut it tight. Yes, it was almost time to say goodbye.
Goodbyes loomed large for more than just the van though, as our group steered along on the last leg of our journey. In a week’s time, the gift that had been presented to me by Fate’s own hands many months before, in the Johannesburg airport, would drift away from me, from us. It was time for Miki to go home. In a mere week and a half, she would be back in Canada, far from the dry landscape of Zimbabwe. Oliver would go his own way again. Brett and I would have to decide how much further we could push Arnie, before we propped a For Sale in his window.
Today was not yet that day though. Today, we pushed on along twisty, turny roads. We claimed victory at another petrol station reached, and shoved off towards Bulawayo where a taste of city life would encircle us again. The roads were getting shorter though and Bob’s voice seemed poignant, as I stared at my travelling companion’s heads in the front seat.
Sing it Bob…
“No, woman, no cry;
Good friends we have,
Oh, good friends we’ve lost
Along the way…”

Thursday Fun
Oh Dear,
What can the matter be?
The bathroom's not clean
and it seems it will never be...
The laundry piles up
and it stretches to eternity
The garage has a mess
that is just darn embarrassing
The counters are gone
buried under paper's cluttering
But the children are coming home soon...
Yes, today
and then we will whisk away
and forget it all in play
with cousins, aunts, uncles
and Grandparents in the foray
Yeah!!!
What can the matter be?
The bathroom's not clean
and it seems it will never be...
The laundry piles up
and it stretches to eternity
The garage has a mess
that is just darn embarrassing
The counters are gone
buried under paper's cluttering

Yes, today

and Grandparents in the foray
Yeah!!!

Peace
There are waffling spirits that swirl around. A crease furrows my brow that I do not like. So I will counter with a little bit of peace sent out via an old song about Peace. I surround me in a colour bath and drift off to dreams of family and love and togetherness.
